Curtiss Allen, Jr. is a music educator and an avid booster of school music in the Inland Empire. He has held various positions in the Redlands Unified School District for the past twenty-five years. He was the director of bands at Redlands High School from 1996 to 2002, and at Cope Middle School from 2002 to 2004. He currently teaches at Beattie Middle School in Highland where he helped with its opening in 2004 under the then principal Carol Purvine. At Beattie he directs three band and two orchestras with a total enrollment of 175.

Curtiss began playing the tuba at age 14 in his father's church orchestra at Bethany Reformed Church in Redlands and shortly thereafter becabme one of the Charter Members of the Redlands Fourth-of-July Band. He played throughout High School with the Redlands Terrier Marching Band and the Redlands High School Wind Ensemble and Pit Orchestra.

In 1985 he enlisted in the United States Army and spent the next three years playing in the 3d Infantry Division Band in Wurzburg, Germany. His love of tuba blossomed in Germany and he purchased a custom-made Rudoph Meinl CC Concert Tuba which he plays to this day! Curtiss went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Tuba Performance and Music Education from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. While a student there, he was principal tubist for the NAU Wind Symphony under Dr. Patricia Hoy. He has studied under Dr. Pete vivona of the Kai Winding Septet, and Dr. Blase scarnatti, a former student of Arnold Jacobs. While in Arizona, he performed with the Flagstaff Symphony, the Grand Canyon Brass, the Phi Mu Alpha Dixieland Band and many others.

Most recently, Curtiss studied conducting at the University of Redlands where he played in the Wind Ensemble under the baton of Dr. Eddie Smith, and studied tuba with Scott Sutherland.

Curtiss directs the music program at the First Presbyterian Church of San Bernardino where his wife Rebecca and various childen enjoy singing in his choir. Curtiss has played with various ensembles throughout the Inland Empire including the 4th-of-July Band with whom he has performed solos on the Sousphone and euphonium at the Redlands Bowl a few summers ago, BrassWorks brass quintet Camp Carleton Cornet Band, and the Richmond Howitzer Battalion Band on a vintage Distin E-flat tuba.

With the illness and eventual passing of Curtiss Sr., who founded the 4th-of-July Band, Curtiss has directed the band since the Band's 2015 Season. In addition, he directs the University of Redlands Pep Band for Bulldog home football games.
